How step replay helps you learn Sudoku logic

Step replay shows how a solved puzzle was completed, one numbered step at a time. Watching the order of placements after you answer helps you spot which row, column, or box made a cell forced.

In Sudoku Sama, that replay is HOW?, after you finish the day’s 6×6 question. These pages are guides. The replay itself is in the app, which requires iOS or iPadOS 26 or later.

What step replay is

A replay is a look back. It is not a nudge while you are still choosing, and it is not a paragraph that names every method.

Replay vs hint vs written explanation

Three different ways to look at a placement. The guides on this site are the written kind.
Hint Step replay Written explanation
When you use it Before you answer, or while you are still solving After you answer When you want the reasoning in words
What it shows A nudge toward the answer Numbered steps as the grid fills in A written account of the exclusions
What it doesn’t show The finished order of the solve A written explanation of every technique The app’s replay

HOW? in Sudoku Sama

The replay is free. After you complete the puzzle, tap HOW? and it plays automatically, step by step, while the grid fills in. This is a step replay, rather than a written explanation of every solving technique. The how-to guide places that tap in the rest of the flow.

Replay controls

A counter shows where you are, in the form Step n / N. Tap or drag the progress bar to jump to any step. You can replay it from the start.

REVIEW

REVIEW lets you revisit a completed puzzle and its replay. A puzzle restored from iCloud can be replayed only if its content is still there. iCloud syncs dates and results only, not the reading text: Daily completion dates and grades, and Archive collection dates and grades. It does not sync the reading text, the original puzzle boards, answers, display name, or preferences.

A replay-review routine

  1. Answer first, without the replay.
  2. Replay the steps, and notice the one where the target cell becomes forced.
  3. Ask which row, column, or 2×3 box ruled the others out. The hidden-single scan and why the boxes are 2×3 are the ideas to look for.
  4. Compare that with what you guessed, and note the clue you missed.
  5. Read the written worked example when you want the same kind of reasoning in words.

Why the replay shows more than one step

One key placement can take several deductions before the cell is clear. The replay shows how the grid was completed. It is not a claim about the shortest human proof.

Where hints fit

Hints are separate from the replay. You use them while solving, and a hint highlights the cell to look at for the first reasoning step. Those hints are part of Premium.

FAQ

How do I open the replay?

The replay is free. After you complete a puzzle, tap HOW? and it plays the numbered steps.

Does the replay tell me technique names?

No. It is a numbered step replay, not a written explanation of every solving technique.

Can I replay old puzzles?

Completed puzzles can be revisited with REVIEW. Past puzzles you have not played are in the Premium Archive. A restored result can be replayed only when its puzzle content is still available.

Can I use the replay on this website?

No. HOW? is in the app. This site has written guides, including the worked example.

Finishing the day can also unlock a short science reading. Science readings are AI-generated editorial text based on linked NASA reference materials. NASA has not reviewed or endorsed these readings or this app. That reading is explained separately, as is a completion streak.
